ENERGY The TCP Riser, if provided for the full riser length, could ofer signifcant benefts in deepwater, including reducing top tension up to 50% (compared with conventional fexible pipe), reducing the weight loading on the foating production, storage and ofoading (FPSO) unit. Also, the TCP Riser has a simple, monolithic wall; although it retains fexibility, its design is inherently simple, leading to a cost-efective solution for deeper waters. The company says it is the world's frst manu- facturer of thermoplastic composite pipe to have qualifed its design, production methods and materials in compliance with the new DNV Recommended Practice for Thermoplastic Composite Pipe (DNVGL RP F119). JULY 2016 16 CompositesWorld TRENDS Airborne Oil & Gas (IJmuiden, The Netherlands, and Houston, TX, US) has been invited to perform a failure mode, efect and criticality assessment (FMECA) for a composite riser solution that could be used at the giant Libra oil feld in the waters ofshore of Brazil. The assessment was requested by drilling rights owner, the Libra Consortium, which includes Petrobras (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Shell Oil Co. (Houston, TX, US), Total SA (Paris, France), and Beijing- based China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) and China National Ofshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC). The request followed a successful preliminary feasibility study performed by Airborne Oil and Gas and engineering design/technology group Wood Group Kenny (London, UK), which showed a 45% reduction in top tension using a hybrid riser design comprising conventional fexible pipe (used for the top and bottom riser sections) and a TCP (thermoplastic composite pipe) section inserted at the mid-water depth. TCP is Airborne's fully-bonded, solid-wall pipe, which features either glass or carbon fber reinforcements embed- ded between a thermoplastic inner liner and external, tough thermoplastic coating. "In this case, we assessed three diferent composite materials in the riser design and opti- mized it for installation, fatigue, top tension and pipe cost," says Dr. Henk de Boer, Airborne's engineering manager. "Interestingly, the most cost-efective riser solution turned out to be the technically best performing as well."
