TRENDS FEBRUARY 2016 28 CompositesWorld We benchmarked solutions from other industries and came across carbon fber technology." In 2013, KONE UltraRope was launched — fabricated via pultrusion from carbon fber, with a polyurethane coat- ing. According to the KONE patent, UltraRope is belt-like (wider than it is thick in cross section), features a series of V-shaped longitudinal grooves, and can be pultruded with epoxy, polyester, phenolic or vinyl ester resins. The rope was tested at KONE's Hyvinkää reliability lab and testing towers, as well as at the Tytyri high-rise testing facility. Focus areas have been product life expectancy, environmental efects, temperature behaviors and friction properties in applicable conditions. KONE UltraRope is expected to reduce the total cost of ownership thanks to signifcant reduction of energy consumption, reduction of downtime caused by building sway, and the longer useful life (2X) of the ropes them- selves compared to steel ropes. For an elevator with a travel height of 500m, energy savings are expected to be approximately 30%. For a travel height of 800m, the savings could climb to 45%. The frst elevator hoisted with KONE UltraRope was installed in one of the Marina Bay Sands resort's eleva- tors in Singapore in September 2013. The Kingdom Tower Jeddah (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), the world's tallest build- ing (1 km high), when completed at the end of 2018, will feature KONE UltraRope technology and the fastest and longest DoubleDeck elevators in the world.
